Questions about being an officer in the Army?

Hello, I am interested in becoming an officer in the Army. However, I am not sure what kinds of things officers do once they become a rank higher than Captain. So my question is, what are some things higher ranking officers do on base and during deployment in the Army. My goal is to become a Cavalry Scout officer under the Armor branch. Is there a lot of desk work and less field time, or do higher ranking officers in a combat mos have more field time? Thanks.

After you have had command of a company (or troop in the case of the Cavalry) you will spend most of your career doing staff work.

Even if you are lucky and get selected for command of a line unit (ie. battalion, brigade and, if you are extremely good and lucky, a division) you will spend most of your time in meetings, going to “mandatory” functions and and visiting your subordinate units.

The bottom line is that you won’t be spending a lot of time in the field with the troops. In modern combat senior officers don’t have the luxury of leading from the front as they have to be at the TOC (Tactical Operations Center) to get a clearer picture of what is going on on the the battlefield.

I suggest you pursue you commission and see how you like the Army after you have command as a Captain. You can then decide what you want to do in the future.
