Army Marines

Army Marines
What’s the difference between the Army & Marines fighting capabilities/assignments?

Someone told me that “The army sets up bases and sh.t & occupy territory and the marines come in, kill the enemy and go the F home.”

While this was said tongue in cheek…can someone give me a better difference between the two organizations?

The Army is the main land combat fighting force of the military.

The Marine Corps, under the Department of the Navy, work closely with the Navy as an amphibious fighting force meant to be used as a Force Protection and Force Projection (they are currently being used out of role in Iraq and Afghanistan to support tactical operations, just as the Air Force and Navy personnel). What Force Protection means, is a force used to protect the military force, as well as any foreign interests abroad. This is why the Marines are often protecting embassies. Also, when the United States has a problem with foreign countires, she usually sends air craft carriers to the region, complete with Marines as a way to project force that says “Don’t mess with us.”

When it comes to full spectrum operations, the Army is there to fight wars. The Marines are there to protect and project force in accordance with United States foreign policy at the time.

EDIT: Also, the argument that the Marine Corps is better than the Army is based on ignorance that they each have a different role and the effective public relations and recruitment campaign effectively portrayed by the Marines.

Every Marine IS a rifleman as every Soldier is a Soldier first (as opposed to their MOS being first). This means the same thing: Every Marine is a fighter before his MOS and every Soldier is a fighter before his MOS.
