What is a good book to learn German?

I am looking to basically understand and maybe read a bit of German. I don’t necessarily need to speak it or be fluent. Is there any particular brand of workbook or program that is better than others?

There used to be a book from Made simple series, German Made Simple, which was excellent to give you the basics with lots of exercises
