Confederate Civil

Confederate Civil
What were the successes of confederate government during the civil war?

The president of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis, wasn’t very aggressive in his tactics toward the Civil War. Davis wanted to play the defensive role, not the offensive, by waiting for the Union attack in “Southern” Territory. However, Commanding General Robert E, Lee believed the opposite. He wanted to take the offensive role once in a while. The Battle of Antietam (9/1862) and Gettysburg (7/1863) were the two chances that the Confederates took to “invade” the North.

That’s what their government did during the war.

However, when states started to secede in 1860, they took the Constitution and broke it down piece by piece. The main difference was that there was to be a presidential election every 6 years, but could not be reelected. Slavery was justified and the central government of the Confederacy would be small and states would be able to nullify federal laws. This relates back to the States’ Rights issues in Congress in the 1830s-1850s (Compact Theory).

I hope this helps.
