Regimental Combat

Front line troops?
I freely admit that as a civilian I have little clue of how front line combat works and have the utmost respect for those involved in it.
My question is, why is it that on news footage, some troops are wearing helmets whilst fighting whereas others are wearing regimental berets? Is it personal preference?
The two different occassions I noticed this both involved British Infantry troops in Iraq (2007) although I am sure it must be the same for other roles/ nationalities.
So why the difference in head gear but otherwise identical uniforms or weapons?
Thanks!
well by right when your on the front line you wear your helmet when your expecting contact other than that its up to the unit commander to decide on what head dress to wear if any at all and as for the 2 types of head dress you seen on the news the troops might have bein ambushed or didnt realise they were coming into contact so they probably didnt have time to put their helmets on ……………….i hope this helps
