Service Medal Ribbon?

i found my grandfathers service ribbons from wwll and Korea he was a marine.and he has like 2-3 of the same ribbon but some of them have a star on them what does the star mean all i know of him is that he was ether a Sgt. or 1lt. i found both of them and i dont know with one was his.and he was infantry ..so yeah what does the stars in the ribbons mean?

For many ribbons, a small bronze-colored star means multiple awards of the same ribbon or medal. Some ribbons have gold stars for repeat awards, though most are bronze.
