How do you sew a patch onto the knee of jeans?

My daughter has holes in the knees of her new-ish jeans. I tried using one of those iron on patches, but it fell off. It’s difficult to reach up the pant leg to sew it on with a needle. Any suggestions?

Easy way, especially by machine, but also by hand, is to rip the leg seam that is the plain seam, not the flat felled one. You only need to open the seam maybe 6″ above and below the patch site. Then restitch after patching.
