Shell Jacket

insulated jacket or shell?

whats better? cant i just add layers if i get the shell? any downside to insulated jacket?
Looking for a snowboarding jacket.

Whats better insulated or shell jackets? I’d assume only difference is the inside insulation. I can just add layers underneath with a shell correct? are there instances you wouldn’t want a insulated jacket?

The downside to an insulated jacket is that it can be overkill on warmer days, whereas you can wear a shell with mid-layers on colder days and just the shell on warmer days. Wear I ride, at Bear Mtn. in S. California, an insulated jacket is usually overkill, but I have a warmer jacket I take with me to Utah.
