States Marines

Is the United States Marine Corps totally different to the British Royal Marines in role and structure?
If so, how? I know the US military is a lot bigger than the UK, but I seem to hear a lot from USMC veterans, even moreso than the US Army (which I would have thought to have been bigger?). Is it perhaps less elite than the British Royal Marines (please no offence intended, I am a civilian and just curious)?
Please only answer with reasoned arguments rather than ‘my country is better than yours,’ bullsh*t.
Thanks!
RM and USMC are different beasts that happen to share the same nom de guerre in “Marine.” In both countries, they also fall under overall command of the Navy.
And in the same way that a US Marine would “look down” (inter-service rivalry is great) at a GI, the Bootie (Royal) will often look down on the Pongo (Marine word for Army).
But the similarities tend to end there. I think it would be far to say that the USMC is trained and equipped for a far more “heavy” breed of warfare, whereas the RM are Commandos. Looking back at the Commando history, you can see that these were the guys who conducted raids, silent insertions, and small-scale but hard-hitting attacks on the enemy from the coast.
This ethos and modus operandi has carried forth, in conjunction with training for conventional warfare and being able to operate as what the Army would call a Battalion, and while not being special forces per se, they are definitely elite amongst British Armed Forces.
The USMC has more people/kit and so is trained entirely differently.
Our Commandos are probably more similar to the US Green Berets.
