do females in the military suffer sexual harassment from the males or their drill sergeants? if so what occurs?

Is it uncommon for women in the USMC, USAF, USN or US army to face sexual harassment from their male counterparts or even their drill instructors? what happens when they face that?

On a side note, is it true that since many of the men in the military haven’t been around women in a long time, they made sexual gestures at female civilians passing through military bases?

I can only speak for the Army. Sexual harassment is pretty common from your peers – guys the same rank as you, and normally that comes from the guys NOT in your unit. You normally develop a professional relationship and then friendship with the guys in your own unit (if you are smart and don’t date any of them and they are at all mature.) But guys outside your unit will still give you crap.

Normally, if you tell them firmly to stop, they will. You have to develop a thick skin and a sense of humor about things, but if guys do cross that line you just need make it clear. Don’t lecture, don’t nag, don’t preach, just ask them to stop. End of story.

You aren’t going to get much of sexual harassment from your superiors, whether Drill Sergeants or senior NCOs or officers. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, it’s just less common. Guys who care about their careers at all are very careful about how they behave towards junior women in the Army. Fraternization can be a career ender. I’ve never had a problem with any senior NCO or officer.

Sexual ASSAULT is not very common in the Army. It does happen sometimes, but it’s usually acquiantance rape. You take the same steps to prevent that as you would in the civilian world.
