War General

War General
Who is your favorite and most respected General From the Civil War?

The American Civil War produced many fine generals throughout its four year period, from both North and South.
Who, would you say, is your favorite General, from either side, and please tell me why?

Respectfully,
Andrew

My personal favorites were:
Union General Joshua Chamberlain, for his intelligence and courage, which led him back to the battlefield over and over even after he suffered injuries that were near-fatal. He was an abolitionist who fought based on his convictions, and his treatment of the surrendering forces at Appomatox showed he was a man with empathy for his foes, and he accepted victory with grace, rather than gloating.

Confederate General James Longstreet, again for his intelligence and courage on the battlefield- and for his conduct after the war. Even though many Southerners hated him after the war, he recognized that the south had lost and should accept defeat, and move on with the consequences of that defeat- including accepting former slaves as full members of society.
