Dug Civil
Can you please help me understand why anyone should be able to engage in a civil suit over the VT massacre?

I hate to even ask this question, but lately I have been confronted by the headlines about the viability of civil suits concerning the Virginia Tech massacre. Is this what our society is coming to? Your loved one gets murdered, you mourn for 15 minutes, and then your first thought is about digging for gold?
I just think things are out of hand. I have complete confidence that these families are going through unspeakable anguish. However, surely VT handled it the best way they thought they could at the time. There wasn’t some conspiracy at VT to leave students vulnerable. I am confident that people would be critical of how it was handled, no matter how it was handled.

I’m glad I came across this question. I just asked my law teacher about this and he said…

He expect people to engage in civil lawsuit, but if they would actually win…no, he does not see that happening. This is because, although many ppl believe the university could’ve done more to protect the students or prevent such (or whatever ppl think) the first shooting was seen as being self contained, so that’s why the first person to look at was the boyfriend or someone of the like.
He say that no lawsuit will hold up in court because the university did everything they could to remedy the situation, even if the kid was crazy and the teacher submitted his work prior to this masscre. She actually violated the confidentiality agreement of the student – teacher relationship.

I personally feel that lawsuits against VT should not hold in court. This could very well happen to ANY school or university at any given point. Now if something like was to happen at another university with a single shooting first, and then shooting to follow and the university didn’t shut down, then yes, lawsuits will prolly proceed, because of what has happened at VT.

I hope this helps.
