What is the best kind of jacket/coat to wear in the winter?

I want to know what keeps you warm the most during winter. I have this huge puffy jacket filled with down and a waterproof covering…but it’s so marshmellow-like and big! I hate feeling like the Michelin Man! Is there anything else I can wear that will keep me warm without all the bulk?

A wool pea coat is extremely warm.
There are also down filled coats that keep the cold air out.
I live in northern Michigan and I have both. The down filled is a mid calf length.
