Coyote Tan

Coyote Tan
Need advice on tanning a coyote hide with special needs?

The coyote had been hit previously with either a .22 or one pellet of buckshot. It entered the gut and had gangrine that seeped into the hide. Any advice on tanning said hide? Want for full mount.
Thanks
Would like to keep this one. This is the nicest speciman the boyfriend has ever seen east of the Missouri River in South Dakota. He’s an old dog with great color, markings, and size.
I read alot more on the hunting catagory than I ever contribute, and I know you regulars on here know your stuff. If there is any home remedy besides Stop Rot I’d like to know.
David D, the hide is not slipping, it is in excellent shape and was taken less than 48 hours ago. The green is from a gunshot wound from someone else about 3-5 days ago. He was hit through the rump and the bullet or bb stayed in the intestinal area which got infected. Didn’t know about this until we skinned him about an hour ago.
Have this weekend to work on him.

The good news is, Coyotes are very forgiving when it comes to mounting. Their skin stretches very nicely, and has an abundance of hair to hide darn near any size hole. Keep the hide frozen until it can be tanned. If you don’t the hair will slip. Does the hair pull out easily now? If you grab it easily and pull, does the hair come out ? If it does. You will not be able to save the hide. Coyotes tend to “Green up” quickly because of the gases their bodies produce. The ” Green” does not mean it can’t be saved. Again the Coyote hide is one of the most forgiving and is easy to tan.

O.k. great. It can still be saved nicely. I have seen tons of Coyotes and they do tend to green up around their wounds. It is very common. Freeze the hide right away. That will stop the rot untill it is ready for tanning.Good job on the kill. An Old dog is a great trophy. That old coyote has out smarted some of the very best, to survive through the years. Then you come along and harvest him. Great job !!! You just out smarted a very wise animal.
