What does tapping your head mean in military combat? And what is the hand signal for cover fire?

In a lot of modern war movies, soldiers will tap their heads as a sign to nearby friendly troops. What does thus gesture signify? Also, what hand gesture asks for cover fire?

Uhhh there’s a few different hand / arm signals that touch the head you would have to be more specific. As far as I know there is no hand signal for cover fire, if rounds are flying theres really no point in keeping noise discipline so you might as well scream your head off cover fire so your battle buddies can hear you in the gunfire.
