Need help with my WWII research on clothes and uniforms. (If you know of links or info, I would appreciate it)
Let me start off by explaining that I’m quite a stickler when it comes to historical accuracy on many details. I am writing a story right now about a young man (Private) in the United States Army at the start of World War II (Preferably, he will end up fighting at Midway, I THINK, but I’m not positive yet. Let’s just say he fights in the Pacific sometime in 1942.)
I know all of the army equipment and clothes that a soldier had in the Pacific during D-Day (’44), but I would like to know if I need to make any alterations to this list (ex. is this the wrong equip. for the USarmy, were items not issued until after 1943, etc.)
M1 helmet w/ camo cover, poncho, Herringbone twill Jacket, Mark II fragmentation grenade, Cartridge belt, Kabar knife and scabbard, Ammunition bandoleer, Herringbone twill trousers, M1 rifle w/ M1 bayonet.
I’m also struggling with finding out what his on-leave uniform would look like. I’m at my wits end and in need of help with my research. Can anyone help me?
Well, if you use Midway, they wore the WWI helmets still. The new helmets were not distributed to forward deployed units at that point in the war. Also, they did not see too much action at Midway, they shot at attacking Japanese planes, but there was no ground action at Midway.
