This comes from the classic BBC TV comedy Dad’s Army from the episode where the misfit platoon of the Warmington-on-Sea Home Guard encounter the newly arrived American Army.

Hodges: “I met some of your lot in 1917, serving under General Perishing”

U.S.Army Colonel: “Don’t you mean General Pershing?”

Hodges: “Well! I knew it was some perishing General”
