Where can I find a list of the people the FBI listed as communist or enemies during WWII?
I am specifically looking to see if J. Robert Oppenheimer was listed as a communist in any FBI files. Pleases direct me to a link with this list.
Oppenheimer was listed on an FBI file as: “Nationalist Tendency: Communist”, in late 1940 or early 1941.
The FBI list I’m referring to was the “Custodial Detention Index” (also known as the “ABC List”). By May 1941, there were around 18,000 names, including 7,000 home-grown Americans, on this list of people whom the FBI suspected might seek to overthrow the government of the US.
The problem is, although I know that the “Custodial Detention Index” existed; and although I am satisfied that J. Robert Oppenheimer’s name was on that list; I can’t find a copy of the list anywhere on line.
Perhaps, via Freedom of Information, the “Custodial Detention Index” is available upon application to the appropriate government department. Or perhaps it has been destroyed. Or perhaps it is still held secret as a national security item. I don’t know.
But that is the document you want, if you seek proof of Oppenheimer’s inclusion, rather than simply somebody else’s word for it.
